What is CNC Milling Service ?
CNC milling service is a service that uses computer numerical control (CNC) technology to control milling machines for precision machining. It uses milling machines with multiple adjustable tools to cut various metal and plastic materials to produce parts with complex geometries and high precision requirements. CNC milling can operate in multiple directions simultaneously, supports 3-axis, 4-axis and even 5-axis machining, and can process multiple features such as planes, holes, slots, curved surfaces, etc. This service is widely used in industries such as automotive, aviation, medical, and electronics, and is suitable for prototyping, small batch production, and large-scale manufacturing.
How CNC Milling Machine Works?
A 3-axis milling machine consists of 3 free-moving spindle systems (X, Y, and Z). In 3-axis milling, the workpiece remains fixed and the tool rotates along the x, y, and z axes according to the NC machining program path compiled from the 3D graphics. Perform feed cutting. At the same time, most newer milling machines can accommodate two additional axes, 4-axis CNC machining and 5-axis CNC machining are more versatile, and they are often used for the production of high-precision and complex parts.
Creating the features described above requires various milling operations:
- Surface milling
- Face milling
- Angle milling
- Form milling
- Profile milling
- Gear milling etc.

Tolerances for CNC Milling Parts
Rapid Protos offers different CNC machining tolerances, such as GD&T callouts, so that your design can be made to fit your needs. We can make standard thread sizes, custom threads, and reach tolerances of 0.001″ depending on the shape of your part and the material you choose. The standard for CNC-milled metals is ISO 2768-m, and the standard for CNC-milled plastics is ISO 2768-c.
| Type | Tolerance |
|---|---|
| Linear dimension | +/- 0.025 mm (+/- 0.001 inch) |
| Hole diameters (not reamed) | +/- 0.025 mm (+/- 0.001 inch) |
| Shaft diameters | +/- 0.025 mm (+/- 0.001 inch) |
| Part size limit | 950 * 550 * 480 mm (37.0 * 21.5 * 18.5 inch) |
Available Materials for CNC Milling Parts
Our CNC milling processes can process a wide range of metal and plastic materials to suit your needs, including metals such as aluminum, steel, stainless steel, brass, titanium alloys, and engineered plastics such as ABS, POM, nylon, and PEEK. We stock over 30 production-grade metal alloy materials that can be used to manufacture a wide range of CNC milled parts for a variety of industries.
Surface Finish Options
After the parts are processed, the surface treatment is carried out to form a unique surface layer to meet the hardness, corrosion resistance, and appearance requirements of the product. The choice of surface treatment depends on the material properties and application of the part. RPS offers the following surface treatment options for CNC-machined metal parts:

Anodizing can improve the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys, increase the surface hardness and wear resistance, and have a good appearance after the coloring surface treatment.

Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. Unlike traditional liquid paint, which is applied with an evaporating solvent, powder coating is typically applied electrostatically and cured with heat or ultraviolet light.

Black oxide, or blackening, is a conversion coating for ferrous metals, stainless steel, copper and copper-based alloys, zinc, powdered metals, and silver solder. It produces an oxide film on the metal surface to add modest corrosion resistance, improve appearance, and reduce light reflection. Black oxide must be treated with oil or wax to provide maximum corrosion resistance.

Bead blasting produces a smooth, matte-textured surface, and sharp edges can be broken and deburred for safe handling. Bead blasting can also improve the mechanical strength, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of parts.

Electroplating is the process of coating an object in a layer of metal using electrodeposition. Electroplating is widely used to improve the surface qualities of metals, such as resistance to abrasion and corrosion, lubricity, reflectivity, and electrical conductivity. Electroplating can also make metals look better.

Polishing is a technique for creating a smooth and shiny surface by rubbing it or applying a chemical treatment. The process creates a surface with significant specular reflection, but it can also reduce diffuse reflection in some materials.

Brushing is a surface treatment process in which an abrasive belt is used to draw marks and lines on the surface of products to achieve a decorative texture.
