These parts are high-precision shearing blades used in electronics assembly lines, designed for cutting optical fibers or fine metal wires. Our customer is an automation equipment manufacturer, who required custom blades that simultaneously feature extremely high hardness, excellent wear resistance, and perfectly formed cutting edges.

Material Selection Dilemma

M2 high-speed steel is renowned for its high hardness, superior wear resistance, and good red hardness, making it an ideal material for manufacturing cutting tools. However, this high-hardness property makes it extremely difficult to machine—posing significant challenges to tool life and machining stability.

Geometric Precision of Cutting Edges

The blades’ cutting edges must have perfect straightness, angle accuracy, and surface finish to ensure smooth, precise, and long-lasting sharpness during shearing. Even minor geometric deviations can lead to reduced cutting quality.

Heat Treatment Challenges

M2 steel requires strict heat treatment (quenching and tempering) to achieve the final high hardness. Controlling part deformation during heat treatment while ensuring uniform hardness and no cracks is critical to determining the blades’ performance.

Precision of CNC Grinding

After heat treatment, the blades have extremely high hardness and can only be final-finished and have their cutting edges formed through CNC grinding. This process requires ultra-high-precision grinding machines and professional grinding strategies.

RPS Solution: CNC Machining & Composite Finishing of M2 Steel

To perfectly address the customer’s challenges, we provided a professional manufacturing solution that integrated three key processes—CNC machining, heat treatment, and CNC grinding—into our in-house production workflow.

Step 1: CNC Milling/Turning (Annealed State)

We first performed CNC machining on M2 steel in its annealed state (before hardening). This step mainly shaped the blade’s outline, mounting holes, and some preliminary cutting angles.

Step 2: Vacuum Heat Treatment

Immediately after machining, the parts underwent professional vacuum heat treatment to bring the M2 steel to the extremely high hardness required by the customer (typically HRC 60–65). Through precise temperature and time control, we minimized part deformation to the greatest extent.

Step 3: Precision CNC Grinding

This was the most critical step. Given the blades’ ultra-high hardness after heat treatment, we used ultra-high-precision CNC grinding machines to perform final precision grinding on the blades’ mating surfaces, positioning surfaces, and—most importantly—cutting edges. This ensured that while the blades maintained extremely high hardness, the straightness and angle tolerance of their cutting edges reached the micron level.

Final Inspection

Strict inspections were conducted on the blades’ hardness, geometric dimensions, and the finish and straightness of their cutting edges—ensuring every blade met the highest industry standards.
