In this project, RPS customized a high-precision CNC-machined housing for a leading digital cinema camera manufacturer. Serving as the core framework of the camera, this housing integrates all internal electronic components, interfaces, and heat dissipation systems. As a critical component of high-end professional equipment, it imposes extremely stringent requirements on dimensional accuracy, surface treatment, structural strength, and heat dissipation performance.
Based on the complex 3D model and technical specifications provided by the customer, we delivered a comprehensive CNC machining solution, ensuring the final product meets the highest standards of the film industry in terms of functionality, durability, and professional aesthetics.
Manufacturing Challenges & RPS Solutions
Material Selection & Performance Considerations
- Challenge: The camera housing needs to be lightweight, high-strength, and feature excellent heat dissipation performance to protect precision electronic components and handle heat generated during long-term operation.
- Solution: We selected 6061 aluminum alloy as the material. This alloy boasts an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and thermal conductivity, making it an ideal choice for manufacturing housings for high-end electronic devices. Through precision CNC machining, we not only shaped the complex geometric structure of the housing but, more importantly, integrated a sophisticated heat dissipation fin structure inside. This significantly improved heat dissipation efficiency, ensuring stable operation of the equipment in harsh shooting environments.
High-Precision CNC Machining & Complex Geometry
- Challenge: The part has an extremely complex structure, including multi-faceted irregular holes, threaded holes, guide rails, and precision card slots for installing screens, buttons, and interfaces. The positional and dimensional tolerances of all features must be strictly controlled within 0.005mm to ensure perfect alignment and seamless assembly of all sub-components.
- Solution: RPS utilized advanced 5-axis machining centers to achieve complex multi-faceted machining of the part, greatly reducing errors caused by multiple clamping operations. Our programming team conducted in-depth optimization of tool paths, ensuring every detail—including the heat dissipation fins in the inner cavity and the interface holes on the exterior—meets the highest tolerance requirements specified in the design drawings. Each threaded hole undergoes precision tapping to guarantee its strength and reliability.
Surface Treatment & Aesthetic Requirements
- Challenge: Beyond functionality, the housing also needs a professional matte finish and scratch-resistant surface to withstand frequent use on shooting sites.
- Solution: We adopted the black anodizing (Type III Anodizing) process. This hard anodizing treatment forms an extremely tough, wear-resistant protective layer on the aluminum alloy surface. Not only does this give the product a deep, professional matte black appearance, but it also significantly enhances its corrosion resistance and durability, preventing scratches and wear caused by daily use.
