In this project, RPS customized a critical steering component—known as the “Triple Clamp” (also referred to as the “Upper Yoke”)—for a high-performance motorcycle manufacturer. This part serves as a key connection between the handlebars and the front fork, directly influencing the vehicle’s handling stability, safety, and riding experience. The customer imposed extremely high requirements on the product’s strength, lightweight design, precision, and surface aesthetics.
We collaborated closely with the customer, starting from the 3D model they provided, to deliver a comprehensive CNC machining solution. This ensured the final product not only met strict technical specifications but also achieved a striking appearance through anodizing treatment—highlighting its high-performance positioning.

Manufacturing Challenges & RPS Solutions

Material Selection & Strength Requirements

  • Challenge: The triple clamp needs to withstand significant stress from road conditions and riding operations, while also being as lightweight as possible to reduce unsprung mass and improve vehicle response speed.
  • Solution: We selected 6061 aluminum alloy as the material. This alloy is widely used in aerospace and high-performance automotive fields due to its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, good corrosion resistance, and excellent machinability. Through precise CNC machining, we ensured the integrity of the material’s internal structure, thereby guaranteeing the part’s reliability under extreme conditions.

Complex Geometric Shapes & Precision Machining

  • Challenge: The part features an extremely complex structure, including multiple holes of varying sizes, cutouts, and 3D curved surfaces. In particular, the front fork mounting holes and central axle hole require extremely high concentricity and dimensional precision. Any minor deviation would lead to misalignment during front fork or handlebar installation, seriously compromising driving safety.
  • Solution: RPS utilized advanced 4-axis and 5-axis machining centers to complete the machining of all complex features in one or minimal clamping operations. This not only significantly improved machining efficiency but, more critically, completely eliminated cumulative errors caused by multiple clampings—ensuring high precision and perfect alignment of all key holes. The tolerances we precisely controlled reached 0.01mm, far exceeding industry standards.

Surface Treatment: Custom Anodizing

  • Challenge: The customer required surface treatments in different colors with wear resistance to distinguish products of different batches or models, while enhancing aesthetic appeal.
  • Solution: We adopted an anodizing process, which forms a hard, wear-resistant, and corrosion-resistant oxide film on the part’s surface. Through customized dyeing, we achieved the bright blue and gold colors required by the customer, endowing the product with a unique high-performance appearance. This treatment not only enhanced the part’s durability but also made the product more visually appealing.

Outcomes & Value

Through RPS’s precision machining services, we successfully delivered this high-performance motorcycle triple clamp. While achieving lightweight design, the product also exhibited excellent rigidity and strength. Additionally, the anodizing process ensured perfect color and durability. This not only met the customer’s strict technical requirements but also brought dual improvements in performance and aesthetics to their motorcycles.
